Spring 2025 Junior League Softball

  • Practices: One practice a week, often on Mondays
  • Games: Every Saturday at 3:30pm & some Tuesdays or Thursdays. There will be one Friday or Saturday night 7:30pm game.
  • Junior 4 & 5 Softball Season: Mid-April to Mid-June
  • Cost: $275 (plus a $50 uniform charge - see below)

The Junior Softball League is designed to provide girls in the 4th & 5th grades an opportunity to have fun learning and playing fast pitch softball. There is a strong emphasis on learning fundamental skills of pitching, fielding, base running, and batting. This is a mostly kid-pitch league with simplified rules.

For example: base stealing is limited; all players bat whether or not they are in the field; the strike zone is expanded slightly; positions are rotated so that everyone plays a mix of infield and outfield; and to keep games competitive, there is usually a maximum number of runs per inning. Players get approximately equal playing time.

Players (typically) pitch with the windmill style, and are limited to 3 innings in a game. The pitching rubber is 35 feet from home plate.

Beginning players are welcome to sign up provided they make a strong commitment to attending practice.

Most games are played in Wellesley with some games played in Wayland and Weston. An All-Star game is played in Wellesley in late May or early June with playoffs to follow ending in mid-June (playoff games may be held any day of the week). Coaching is primarily by parent volunteers. In creating the teams we try to keep girls together with at least some of their classmates.
Players are expected to attend a majority of practices and games. Parents are expected to keep coaches informed of their child’s plans. Games will not be held over Memorial Day Weekend.
In addition to parent coaching, we expect to have professional instruction from Frozen Ropes, DC Baseball Academy or another professional program.

Players should have their own glove. They are encouraged to bring their own bats and helmets, but coaches can provide loaners upon advance request.

Uniforms: Girls who played Junior League last spring or 10U last fall will wear the light/dark jerseys they already have. New players (or returning players who outgrew or lost their jerseys) will indicate jersey size at registration and will be given two jerseys, one light and one dark, to wear this season and in future spring and fall seasons until outgrown. Jerseys are high quality and have last names on backs. There is a $50 charge for each set of new jerseys. Players are encouraged to wear softball pants (supplied by families), which should be black (not white, not gray). Socks will be provided, and visors too for girls who didn’t play last summer or fall.

Parents are always welcome to help out! (A background check must be competed prior to the first game)

Spring 2025 Senior League Softball

  • Practices: One practice a week, at a time scheduled by the coach

The Senior Softball League is a recreational fast pitch softball league designed to give girls in 6th, 7th, & 8th grades the opportunity to learn and play more competitive softball. The Senior League uses official USA Softball rules and teams play an approximately 12-game schedule with all teams participating in league playoffs at the conclusion of the regular season.

There are generally two games and one practice per week. Games are played mostly in Wellesley, with some games potentially in Weston, Needham, and/or Wayland. Playoff games may be played any day of the week.

Selected players participate in All-Star Game festivities in late May or early June. Coaches are experienced parent volunteers.

Players are expected to attend a majority of practices and games. Parents are expected to keep coaches informed of their child’s plans. Games will not be held over Memorial Day Weekend.

Although there is an increase in the competitive structure of the Senior League relative to the Junior League, there remains a strong emphasis on learning fundamental skills of pitching, fielding, base running, and batting. Beginning players are welcome to sign up
provided they make a strong commitment to attending practice.

Players should have their own glove. They are encouraged to bring their own bats and helmets, but coaches can provide loaners upon advance request.
