    JUNIOR LEAGUE SPRING SOFTBALL – GRADES 4 & 5

    • Practices: One practice a week, often on Mondays
    • Games: Every Saturday at 3:30pm & some Tuesdays or Thursdays. There will be one Friday or Saturday night 7:30pm game.
    • Junior 4/5 Softball Season: Mid-April to Mid-June
    • Cost: $275 (plus a $50 uniform charge - see below)

The Junior Softball League is designed to provide girls in the 4th & 5th grades an opportunity to have fun learning and playing fast pitch softball. There is a strong emphasis on learning fundamental skills of pitching, fielding, base running, and batting. This is a mostly kid-pitch league with simplified rules.

For example: base stealing is limited; all players bat whether or not they are in the field; the strike zone is expanded slightly; positions are rotated so that everyone plays a mix of infield and outfield; and to keep games competitive, there is usually a maximum number of runs per inning. Players get approximately equal playing time.

Players (typically) pitch with the windmill style, and are limited to 3 innings in a game. The pitching rubber is 35 feet from home plate.

Beginning players are welcome to sign up provided they make a strong commitment to attending practice.

Most games are played in Wellesley with some games played in Wayland and Weston. An All-Star game is played in Wellesley in late May or early June with playoffs to follow ending in mid-June (playoff games may be held any day of the week). Coaching is primarily by parent volunteers. In creating the teams we try to keep girls together with at least some of their classmates.

Players are expected to attend a majority of practices and games. Parents are expected to keep coaches informed of their child’s plans. Games will not be held over Memorial Day Weekend.

In addition to parent coaching, we expect to have professional instruction from Frozen Ropes, DC Baseball Academy or another professional program.

Players should have their own glove. They are encouraged to bring their own bats and helmets, but coaches can provide loaners upon advance request.

Uniforms: Girls who played Junior League last spring or 10U last fall will wear the light/dark jerseys they already have. New players (or returning players who outgrew or lost their jerseys) will indicate jersey size at registration and will be given two jerseys, one light and one dark, to wear this season and in future spring and fall seasons until outgrown. Jerseys are high quality and have last names on backs. There is a $50 charge for each set of new jerseys. Players are encouraged to wear softball pants (supplied by families), which should be black (not white, not gray). Socks will be provided, and visors too for girls who didn’t play last summer or fall.

Parents are always welcome to help out! (but must fill out a 2024 CORI form)

SENIOR LEAGUE SPRING SOFTBALL – GRADES 6,7,& 8

    • Practices: One practice a week, at a time scheduled by the coach
    • Games: Saturdays & Sundays at 1pm or 3:30pm and Wednesdays at 6pm. There will also be some Friday night games at 7:30pm.
    • Senior League Softball Season: Mid-April to Mid-June
    • Cost: $275 (plus a $50 uniform charge - see below)

The Senior Softball League is a recreational fast pitch softball league designed to give girls in 6th, 7th, & 8th grades the opportunity to learn and play more competitive softball. The Senior League uses official USA Softball rules.

Senior League teams play an approximately 12-game schedule with all teams participating in league playoffs at the conclusion of the regular season. There are generally two games and one practice per week. Games are played mostly in Wellesley, with some games potentially in Weston, Needham, and/or Wayland.

Playoff games may be played any day of the week. Selected players participate in All-Star Game festivities in late May or early June. Coaches are experienced parent volunteers.

Players are expected to attend a majority of practices and games. Parents are expected to keep coaches informed of their child’s plans. Games will not be held over Memorial Day Weekend.

Although there is an increase in the competitive structure of the Senior League relative to the Junior League, there remains a strong emphasis on learning fundamental skills of pitching, fielding, base running, and batting. Beginning players are welcome to sign up provided they make a strong commitment to attending practice.

Players should have their own glove. They are encouraged to bring their own bats and helmets, but coaches can provide loaners upon advance request.

Uniforms: Girls who played Senior or Junior League last spring or 12U last fall will wear the light/dark jerseys they already have. Players are required to wear softball pants (supplied by families), which should be black (not white, not gray). Socks will be provided.

    Summer Softball

    2023 Summer Weekday Softball

Teams for 3rd (rising 4th) through 12th Grades
Register by May 20 to be assured a roster spot!

Wellesley Youth Baseball and Softball invites girls in grades 3 (rising 4th) and above to register for participation in Summer Weekday Softball. Wellesley would like to enter teams in the 10U, 12U, 14U and 18U divisions.

Players of all ability levels -- from novice to advanced -- are welcome to sign up for 10U and 12U.  There are no tryouts -- everyone who registers by the deadline will have a spot. The only prerequisite for these levels is enthusiasm.  Players at the 14U and 18U levels should have at least some experience and reasonable softball skills.

For Wellesley teams, the emphasis in summer weekday travel softball is on competing to the best of our abilities, improving skills, and simply having fun.  There are no playoffs.

Currently expected schedule:  Teams play a 12 game schedule starting the week of June 26 and ending August 3. While vacation schedules can be accommodated, we expect players on the roster to be available for at least half of the games and attend practice during the weeks that they are in town.  All games (two per week) are scheduled on Monday through Thursday evenings with 6 home games in Wellesley and 6 away games in the Greater Boston region.  There are no weekend games.  Practices are generally held on weekday evenings as well, although sometimes coaches hold optional practices on the weekends.

ALL REGISTRATIONS MUST BE PROCESSED ONLINE at Wellesley Youth Baseball & Softball.  Girls must be registered by May 22, 2023 to be assured a spot on a team. Girls signing up after that date will only be offered a spot if the roster has space.

The registration fee is $255. Full refunds will be processed for any registrants not placed because of an inability to field a team of the appropriate level for your daughter. For questions, please contact Pete Serreze (pserreze@gmail.com).

    Fall Travel Softball

    Wellesley Fall Travel Softball

Girls in grades 4-12 in September 2023

Wellesley's fall teams participate in the Charles River Fall Softball League at the 10U, 12U, 14U and 18U divisions against teams from Newton, Needham, Natick, Waltham, Watertown, Wayland, and other neighboring towns. Games are schedule on Sundays beginning September 10 and will run through the end of October. There will be no games on Oct. 8.

10U: Girls play one game each Sunday, starting at either 9am or 11am. There will be one practice per week, usually on Saturday.

12U & 14U: Girls play one or two games each Sunday, with the first game starting at 9am and the second game starting at 11am. There will be one practice per week, usually on Saturday. We try to structure it so that girls will generally play a single game each Sunday, although doubleheaders are possible depending on roster size.

18U: Girls play one extended (9 inning) game each Sunday, with games starting at 9:30am or 10am. Practices may be scheduled at the coach's discretion. Significant prior softball or baseball experience is expected for 18U.

Practices will usually be held on Saturdays. The 10U & 12U levels will include professionally-led pitching instruction. The times are not yet determined and may vary from week to week. We understand if you need to miss practices or pitching instruction due to other Saturday commitments.

10U/12U/14U Uniforms: Players will use the same set of light/dark jerseys that they received for spring Junior & Senior Leagues. Incoming 4th grader girls, as well as anyone else who doesn't have a spring Junior/Senior jersey to re-use, will need to order their jerseys when registering. There is a $50 jersey charge. The jerseys are high quality, with last names on the backs and will be carried forward to future spring/fall seasons until outgrown. In addition, families must provide softball pants, which should be black.

18U Uniforms: Players will receive a single jersey to be worn this fall and in future fall seasons.

REGISTER NOW AT WELLESLEYYBS.ORG. Registrations should be submitted by August 14, 2023. Late registrants are not guaranteed a spot if rosters are filled, and may not receive their jerseys in time for the first game. The registration fee is $165 (plus a potential $50 jersey charge - see above)

    Fall Softball - Grades 2 & 3

    U12 Tournament Team

WELLESLEY GIRLS SOFTBALL U12 TOURNAMENT TEAM

    **6th-7th Grade (12U)**

Evaluations in August & September - Signup by August 1

Wellesley Girls Softball is again forming a select 12U team to represent Wellesley in some weekend tournaments in May-June of 2024.  Led by a professional coach, the team will hold evaluations this August/September and then practice together this fall and winter.

Grade eligibility: 6th and 7th grade (in academic year 2023-2024)

Team emphasis: As a select team, the team will be more competitively oriented than WGS’s existing programs.  Still, as always, there will be a strong emphasis on promoting the girls’ development as softball players; their well-being; and simply having fun.

Coaching: We expect that the team again will be led by Keliann Kirby, a professional coach from DC Baseball Academy.

Tournament Schedule: Although the exact weekends are not yet known, we expect to be playing tournaments over most of the weekends between (and including) Memorial Day weekend through the last weekend in June.

Relationship to other WGS programs: The team is intended to be supplemental to, and not a replacement for, existing WGS programs. Thus, girls will be required to play Senior League in Spring 2024. They are also encouraged to play Fall Softball this fall, and Summer Weekday Travel Softball in Summer 2024. Program schedules will be coordinated to minimize conflicts.

Evaluation schedule: Girls are strongly encouraged to attend at least one of the following evaluations: Saturday, August 5, 8:30-10:30 a.m.; Sunday, September 10, 5:00-7:00 p.m.  Both at Lee Field.

Cost:  The total cost has not yet been set.  It should be in the same range as this past year, which was $950.  This will be split into 2 installments, with $150 due immediately following team selection to reserve your roster spot, and the balance due in early December. There is also a $25 fee to cover evaluations.
